Important Screening Constraints
Strict Window: Screening is performed between 8 to 13 weeks (FMF-certified SSDW Lab 6) or 9 to 13 weeks (PRISCA 4). The exact Gestational Age (GA) from your NT scan report dictates this window, overriding your Last Menstrual Period (LMP).
- Exceeding 13 Weeks: If your GA exceeds 13 weeks, Double Marker screening cannot be performed. A second-trimester screening (Triple or Quadruple Marker) is indicated between 14 to 22 weeks.
- Software vs. Lab: FMF certification applies strictly to the reporting software and risk-calculation protocol, not the diagnostic lab itself. Some risk models may apply narrower operational windows (e.g., 11–13 weeks) depending on the software protocol.

Laboratory Explanation & Risk Calculation Limits
Screening, Not a Diagnosis: The Double Marker Test is a statistical screening. Risk estimates are generated by software using biochemical markers combined with maternal and ultrasound inputs. The result has no diagnostic value by itself and must be interpreted by your treating clinician.
Input Accuracy & Limitations
- Input Sensitivity: The calculated risk depends strictly on the accuracy of ultrasound details (NT scan, CRL) and maternal details (age, exact weight, clinical history). Even minor weight errors can shift calculated risk percentiles.
- Responsibility Boundary: Because the software relies entirely on the inputs provided in the TRF, the lab cannot release the report until all required information is completely and accurately filled out.
- Calculation Limits: Risks cannot be calculated for triplets or higher-order gestations. In twin pregnancies with fetal demise (vanishing twin), risk estimation can be computed but may be clinically unreliable.
Methodology & Quality Standards
- Method Standard: Analysis is performed using FMF-certified Free β-hCG and PAPP-A kits.
- MoM (Multiples of the Median): Reports will display the raw marker values, as well as the MoM values used by the screening software. Ultrasound inputs (NT/CRL) may also appear as MoM.
- External Quality Assurance: The laboratory strictly participates in UKAS-proficiency testing (EQAS) for maternal serum markers to ensure processing accuracy.
