Prenatal Screening Markers (Maternal Serum Screening)

These first and second-trimester blood tests measure specific biochemical markers in the mother’s blood. When combined with ultrasound data, they help assess the statistical risk of the fetus having chromosomal anomalies, such as Down syndrome or Edwards syndrome. At Thyrocare, the risk assessment is done using the FMF-certified SSDW Lab 6 software.

Test Preparation Guidelines

  • Fasting Requirements: The Basic Antenatal profile and prenatal marker tests, including Double, Triple, and Quadruple marker tests, do not require fasting. However, 10 to 12 hours of overnight fasting is mandatory if you are booking the Advanced or Comprehensive Antenatal profiles (due to the inclusion of fasting blood sugar and iron-related tests).
  • Mandatory USG Report: If you are booking any prenatal marker test, keep a copy of your recent ultrasound (USG) report ready. The lab technician will need this to process the exact fetal measurements.
  • Sample Collection: Most profiles require a standard venous blood draw. If you book the Comprehensive Antenatal Profile, a clean-catch midstream urine sample is additionally required.

FAQs on Prenatal & Antenatal Screening

Is a prenatal marker test a definitive diagnosis for chromosomal issues?
No, prenatal markers (like the Double, Triple, or Quad tests) are screening assessments, not diagnostic ones. They calculate the statistical probability or risk of fetal abnormalities. Your clinician will interpret this report alongside your ultrasound findings and may suggest confirmatory diagnostic tests (like an amniocentesis) if the risk ratio is high.
Why is an ultrasound (USG) report mandatory for marker tests?
The laboratory uses complex software to calculate chromosomal risks. This software requires highly specific, real-time measurements of the fetus, such as the Crown Rump Length (CRL) and Nuchal Translucency (NT), Gestational Age (GA), which can only be obtained from a recent ultrasound report. Without this data, the biochemical blood markers cannot be accurately contextualized.
When is the best time to take the Double, Triple, or Quadruple marker tests?
Timing is critical for risk assessment. The Double Marker must be done between 8 weeks and 13 weeks & 6 days of gestation (first trimester). Both the Triple Marker and Quadruple Marker must be done between 14 and 22 weeks of gestation (second trimester).
Do I need to fast before taking an Antenatal profile?
The Basic Antenatal profile and prenatal marker tests do not require fasting. Advanced and Comprehensive Antenatal profiles require 10 to 12 hours of overnight fasting because they include fasting blood sugar and iron-related tests.
What type of sample is collected for these profiles?
For the prenatal markers and the Basic/Advanced antenatal profiles, only a venous blood sample is required. If you choose the Comprehensive Antenatal profile, you will need to provide both a blood sample and a clean-catch urine sample.
How long will it take to get my reports?
Antenatal profile reports are delivered within 24 to 36 hours. Prenatal marker reports require 48 hours because the biochemical marker values are processed with ultrasound details through risk-calculation software. The confirmed reporting time is shared during booking.
