HbA1c Results and Reference Ranges

HbA1c is reported as a percentage. The following ranges are commonly used to screen for and diagnose prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Understanding the result: In a person without clear diabetes symptoms, a result in the diabetes range normally requires confirmation with a repeat HbA1c or another glucose test. For people already diagnosed with diabetes, the target HbA1c is individual and can differ from these diagnostic ranges.

How HbA1c Test Report Accuracy Is Assured

As observed in rare cases, an HbA1c test report can be cancelled when a technical inconsistency is identified in the HPLC graph (chromatogram). Although the ₹399 report does not display this graph, Thyrocare generates and reviews it internally before releasing the HbA1c result.

When the graph is inconsistent, Thyrocare does not release an HbA1c value that could be misleading. The report-status note clearly states that the result cannot be released because of graph inconsistency.

In most such cases, Thyrocare asks for a fresh sample for an alternative HbA1c test that does not use the HPLC method, together with thalassemia testing. This verification process assures that an HbA1c result is released only when the laboratory can report it reliably.
