Details of Tests in the Viral Marker Panel

This panel is most commonly requested for pre-surgery clearance, pregnancy (antenatal care), premarital health checkups, and visa or employment medical purposes. It is also frequently added to routine preventive health checkups.

Test NameWhat It Indicates
HBsAg
Hepatitis B Surface Antigen
Checks for proteins (antigens) found on the surface of the Hepatitis B virus. It is used as a primary indicator to identify potential active (acute or chronic) infections.
Anti-HCV
Hepatitis C Antibody
Looks for antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the Hepatitis C virus. It helps indicate whether a person has had past or present exposure to the virus.
HIV 1 & 2 AntibodyScreens for antibodies developed by the immune system against the two main types of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Screening Test, Not Final Diagnosis

The Viral Marker Panel checks whether selected viral markers are reactive or non-reactive in the blood sample. Screening results help identify whether a follow-up medical evaluation is needed.

A reactive report is not the same as a final diagnosis. Doctors may advise repeat testing, confirmatory testing, or disease-specific tests based on the result, symptoms, history, and clinical requirements.

What “Reactive” and “Non-Reactive” Mean

  • Non-Reactive: The screening marker was not detected at the time of testing.
  • Reactive: The screening marker was detected and needs medical review.
  • Follow-Up: A doctor may advise confirmatory tests, repeat testing, or disease-specific tests.

FAQs on Viral Marker Tests in India

Is the Viral Marker test the same as an STD profile?
No. The Viral Marker Screening Panel checks HBsAg, Anti-HCV, and HIV 1 & 2 antibody only. An STD profile is a larger sexually transmitted disease panel and includes additional tests, such as HSV 1 & 2, chlamydia, syphilis, and Neisseria Gonorrhoeae. The number of parameters depends on the profile type.
Is HBsAg the same as a Hepatitis B test?
HBsAg is a common screening marker for Hepatitis B. If HBsAg is reactive, the treating doctor may advise follow-up Hepatitis B tests for confirmation, staging, or viral-load assessment.
Does Anti-HCV confirm Hepatitis C infection?
Anti-HCV is a screening marker for Hepatitis C exposure. A reactive Anti-HCV result does not measure HCV viral load. Doctors often advise HCV RNA PCR testing when confirmation or viral-load assessment is needed.
Is the Viral Marker report kept private?
Yes. Viral Marker reports are shared digitally with privacy and confidentiality. Share the report only with your treating doctor or a qualified medical professional for medical interpretation.
Do I need a doctor’s prescription to book this screening panel?
No, a prescription is not strictly required to book a preventive screening test with Thyrocare. However, we strongly recommend sharing the results with a physician, as viral marker interpretation requires clinical expertise.
Is this panel safe for pregnant women during antenatal screening?
Yes. This panel only requires a standard blood sample collection, which is safe during pregnancy. In fact, HBsAg, Anti-HCV, and HIV screening are included in early antenatal care to help protect both the mother and the baby.
What technology does the lab use for the Viral Marker (Triple H) test?
The laboratory uses Fully Automated Chemiluminescent Microparticle Immunoassay (C.M.I.A) technology to process the HBsAg, Anti-HCV, and HIV I & II tests.
Can I get a false positive result for Hepatitis B (HBsAg)?
Yes, false positive results for HBsAg can occasionally occur. This transient reaction can be seen in patients undergoing biotin therapy, mouse monoclonal antibody therapy, or those who have recently received an HBV vaccination.
Can the test miss an infection (false negative)?
Yes, a non-reactive test does not entirely exclude the possibility of an infection. False negative cases can be seen if the testing is done too early in the course of the disease (during the window period) or in patients with immunosuppression.
Are these tests rapid card immunoassay tests?
No, these are fully automated lab tests that use CMIA technology, and the reports are presented in OD ratios with reference ranges for reactive and non-reactive results.
Do you offer rapid card immunoassay blood tests for viral markers?
Yes, rapid card tests are available for all three viral markers, but they do not offer a meaningful price or reporting-time advantage over this automated lab panel.
Why choose the automated lab test over a manual rapid card test?
This panel uses Fully Automated Chemiluminescent Microparticle Immunoassay (C.M.I.A) technology rather than basic rapid card tests. Because rapid tests are manual, they must be processed in batches. In contrast, our automated systems begin processing samples as soon as they arrive at the lab. This automation allows OD-ratio reporting with reference ranges at a cost that is equal to or lower than manual testing methods.
If HBsAg is reactive, which Hepatitis B tests are available with you?
If HBsAg is reactive, the treating doctor may ask for additional Hepatitis B tests depending on the case. The following Hepatitis B tests are available with us: Hepatitis B Profile, Anti-HBs, Anti-HBc IgM, Anti-HBc Total, HBeAg, HBeAb, HBV Qualitative PCR, HBV Quantitative PCR, and HBV genotyping with drug resistance testing.
If Anti-HCV is reactive, which Hepatitis C tests are available with you?
If Anti-HCV is reactive, the treating doctor may advise follow-up testing to check current infection status, viral load, or genotype. The following Hepatitis C tests are available with us: Anti-HCV Total, HCV IgG, HCV RNA Qualitative PCR, HCV RNA Quantitative PCR, and Hepatitis C genotyping.
If HIV 1 & 2 antibody is reactive, which HIV follow-up tests are available with Thyrocare or Healthcare Offers?
If the HIV 1 & 2 antibody is reactive, the report should be reviewed by a qualified medical professional before selecting the next test. The following HIV follow-up tests are available with us: HIV-1 RNA Qualitative PCR, HIV-1 RNA Quantitative PCR, HIV Western Blot, HIV I and II, HIV drug resistance test, and HIV Proviral DNA Qualitative Real Time PCR.
How do I know my test report is authentic?
Your digitally verifiable report includes a unique QR code. You can scan this QR code to check the authenticity of your reported values, and it remains active for 30 days from the report’s release date.

Note: The Viral Marker Screening Panel is for laboratory screening and preventive health checkup purposes. A reactive screening result is not a final diagnosis and needs medical review. The information here cannot be considered a substitute for professional medical advice.
