Why Diabetes Health Checkups Need More Than HbA1c and Fasting Sugar
Blood sugar results are only one part of diabetes testing. Diabetes can affect the kidneys and cardiovascular system without causing early symptoms, while certain blood conditions can also influence the HbA1c result. The additional tests in the Advanced and Comprehensive profiles help answer questions that fasting sugar and HbA1c alone cannot answer.
Why Are Kidney and Urine Tests Important in Diabetes?
Kidney damage can begin before a person notices any symptoms. Serum creatinine and eGFR show how well the kidneys are filtering blood, while the urine albumin-creatinine ratio checks whether albumin is leaking into the urine. These tests examine different aspects of kidney health. A normal serum creatinine result does not rule out early albumin leakage in urine.
Why Is Cholesterol Tested Along with Blood Sugar?
Diabetes increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. High LDL cholesterol, high triglycerides, or low HDL cholesterol can add to that risk without producing noticeable symptoms. A lipid profile therefore provides information that HbA1c and fasting glucose cannot provide.
Why Does the Advanced Profile Include a Complete Hemogram?
HbA1c is affected by how long red blood cells remain in circulation. Anemia, recent blood loss, blood transfusion, and some hemoglobin disorders can make the result higher or lower than expected. A complete hemogram can identify anemia and other blood-count changes that may help explain why HbA1c and blood glucose do not agree.
Why Does the Comprehensive Profile Include Specialised Diabetes Tests?
C-peptide helps show how much insulin the pancreas is producing naturally. Fructosamine reflects blood sugar control over a shorter period than HbA1c, while blood ketone testing checks for excess ketone production. Fasting insulin and HOMA-IR can add information when insulin resistance is being assessed. These tests answer specific questions and are not replacements for fasting glucose or HbA1c.
