Significance of the Male Hormone Screening Panel

This advanced hormone profile focuses on specialized androgens, binding proteins, and growth hormone testing, which are helpful for sexual and reproductive health, unexplained hair loss, fitness and physiological development, and androgen assessment.

  • Free Testosterone, Total Testosterone & SHBG: SHBG is a protein that binds to testosterone, making it inactive. Testing SHBG helps determine the free testosterone index, which is the amount of hormone available for muscle growth, mood, and libido.
  • DHT & Androstenedione: These tests provide additional information about androgen production and metabolism. DHT testing is also included in some hair-loss-related hormone assessments.
  • HGH: Human Growth Hormone influences physical recovery. Its secretion is tied to sleep, exercise, and stress.

FAQs on the Male Hormone Screening Panel

What technologies are used to process the tests in this panel?
Total Testosterone, SHBG, HGH, and Androstenedione are processed using Chemiluminescent Immunoassay (CLIA). Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and Free Testosterone are processed using ELISA (Solid Phase Enzyme Immunoassay).
Why is SHBG tested alongside testosterone?
Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) regulates the distribution of testosterone between protein-bound and free states. Testing SHBG allows the laboratory to calculate the ratio of testosterone to SHBG, known as the free androgen index (FAI) or free testosterone index (FTI). This helps discriminate subjects with excessive androgen activity from normal individuals.
What is the difference between total testosterone and free testosterone?
Total testosterone measures both protein-bound and unbound testosterone circulating in the blood. Free testosterone measures the portion that is not bound to proteins. Testing both values with SHBG gives additional information about testosterone status.
Can this panel of hormone tests be helpful for unexplained hair loss?
Yes. The panel includes DHT, SHBG, free testosterone, total testosterone, and androstenedione, which are part of some hormone assessments for unexplained hair loss. However, hair-loss evaluation can also include cortisol, thyroid, iron, vitamin, and mineral tests, and the test selection differs for males and females.
Does one low testosterone result confirm testosterone deficiency?
No. One result alone does not confirm testosterone deficiency. A doctor may advise a repeat early-morning testosterone test and assess the result with symptoms, medical history, medicines, and other hormone tests.
Why does this panel not include LH, FSH, TSH, or prolactin?
These tests are not necessary in every male hormone assessment. LH and FSH are added when fertility, testicular function, or the cause of low testosterone needs evaluation. TSH is added when thyroid dysfunction is suspected. Prolactin is tested when hyperprolactinemia or pituitary involvement requires investigation, especially when low testosterone is accompanied by low or low-normal LH. Our Male Infertility Package includes LH, FSH, and TSH, while prolactin is available as a separate PRL test.
Does Thyrocare provide semen analysis with this panel?
No. Thyrocare does not provide semen analysis because the sample is time-sensitive and needs fresh processing at the laboratory within a short time after collection. Semen analysis should be done at a nearby laboratory or fertility clinic that processes the sample immediately.

Note: These blood tests are for screening and follow-up guidance. For diagnostic purposes, results should always be assessed in correlation with clinical history and other findings. Information here cannot be considered a substitute for professional medical guidance.
